When you go to a bakery, believe me, the first thing that we would always look at be a different or a new shape or type of cake. Obviously, we appreciate the novel ideas and want to try them instantly even though they might taste just the same and similar to any other cookie which we would have had before. So, yes my point here is that we can take this little idea into our baking skills and make it special for the kids this Christmas.

  • There are varied stencils available in the stores and as well online. Try to get those and remember to select the ones that your kid might love to see – like a cartoon or a Santa face or could be anything interesting for the Christmas like a Christmas tree shape, gingerbread, snowflake, star or even glove shape.
  • You can make some of your own for example try to take a small portion of the cookie dough and roll it in order to make a twisted straw kind of a thing.
  • Once done, do not keep the length more than 4 inches, take one of the ends and bend it in a fashion to look like a cane. You can then add a red and white alternate color to it to give it a fancier look like below.

  • Next, you could make some alphabetical cookies by using the stencils. What better way to teach the kid than this? You can spread the cookies in a tray and ask the kid to eat away cat and dog from it – fun, isn’t it?
  • You can as well make some pretty icings on the cookies by using the white icing and some green red and white sprinklers on it. Since green, red and white marks Christmas visually for us.
  • Use some m & m a to decorate a round cookie — it is a very simple yet innovative idea.
  • Make some sock shaped cookie and dip it into brown and white chocolates to get them tastier. Again add some sprinklers to it to beautify

So that was about the shapes, which you can innovate based on the ideas I have already noted above.

Let’s look at another very important aspect of a kid friendly Christmas recipe for cookies.

2. Make it Healthy

We all have enough knowledge of what is good for our health and which is the important ingredient we must add to our daily diet. But what we miss is how, when and with what! Did you know banana is not just for energy sake but we as well need potassium in our daily diet (R) which is found abundant in a banana, dry fruits, and many others?  Let me tell you about various ways we can make the cookies baked for kids healthier and also add such supplements that they would not want to eat otherwise.

  • Be aware of the allergies that your kid has and avoid it absolutely. For example :
  •  if your kid is allergic to milk, we can always have a smart substitute like water + butter. Replace 1 cup of milk with 1 cup of water along with 1.5 teaspoons of butter instead.
  • Similarly, for allergies to egg, you can add 1.5 tablespoons vegetable oil mixed with 1.5 tablespoons water.
  • You can substitute peanut butter with Nutella (R), it is the best and closes replacement you can include in the cookie dough to maintain the texture and shape.
  • Use some fruits like banana or apple juice for mixing the dough. A very healthy recipe for baking a cookie is as below :

1 medium size – banana
1/3 cup – peanut butter
1/3 cup – apple juice
1 large – egg
1/2 tsp – vanilla essence
2/3 cup – wheat flour
1 1/3 cup – dry oats
1 teaspoon – baking soda

We are not just adding 2 fruits here but also a very healthy content which is oats. This not just makes a cookie crispier but also healthier for your little one

3. Taste & texture – yum and yummier

Leaving apart the shape and the content in a cookie, what we want as an end result is nothing more than the taste of it. Ah! How I like if it melts into my mouth giving the best of the crispy yet soft texture. Mouth watering isn’t it? So yes, maintaining the texture is also the utmost important bit of baking which holds up in the recipe.

  • Remember to preheat the oven like I keep saying in all my articles. Preheating allows it to start cooking the substance instantly evenly.
  • Bake only until the cookie edges turn golden but soft in the center.
  • Do not immediately transfer the cookie into a cool container, let it stay in the oven for 10 minutes after you put it off, before getting it out.
  • Store the cookies in an airtight container always. Keeps it fresh and increases the life of the cookie.
  • Do not make the cookie too thick or too thin, it changes the taste and texture of it and also maintains good space between the cookies while baking them say about 2 inches for them to breathe!

It is not easy to bake a cookie and hence baking is art too. But once you master it and play with the shapes of a cookie, you have not just mastered the skills of baking but also the path to your kid’s stomach. We feel immense pleasure when our kids eat the food prepared with love and happiness – don’t we?
